Teaching Philosophy
Eileen attended SBCC and transferred to UCSB where she received a B.A. in Literature from the College of Creative Studies. After graduation, Eileen volunteered as an Adult Literacy Tutor, which inspired her career as an educator to help people not only improve their reading and writing skills, but to strengthen their belief in themselves as learners. She earned a Masters Degree in Reading Education from UCSB. Eileen’s classes tend to focus on readings that are relevant in our world today, address the whole student as a learner, and provide a low-key atmosphere where students can learn from each other and have a good time while they are doing it. A student once remarked that Eileen “is a great teacher, but she is also a thoughtful teacher, and I think that is more important.” If Eileen could be described as having an evil agenda, it would be to get students to think that the book is always better than the movie.
